Malama (Matoula) Chatzi
Born in Thessaloniki, Greece, she studied at the Contemporary Conservatory of Thessaloniki, graduating with a scholarship and receiving the highest distinction from the class of V. Belomazov. She continued her postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy in London with scholarships from the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron Mousikis) and the Paxos Festival Trust.
She earned a postgraduate degree in Flute Performance with distinction, as well as a teaching diploma, studying under Sebastian Bell, Jaime Martin, and Keith Bragg (piccolo). She has also attended masterclasses with W. Bennett, M. Cox, A. Marion, J. Baxtresser, R. Aitken, F. Manz, and I. Makovei.
She has taught at the Municipal Conservatories of Kavala, Kozani, and Kilkis, as well as at King’s College London. She served as Principal Flute of the Municipal Orchestra of Thessaloniki. Since 2001, she has been Associate Principal Flute of the State Orchestra of Thessaloniki and has taught at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki. She has also taught at music seminars in Athytos, Kavala, and Agios Nikolaos, and has served as a jury member for the International Flute Competitions of Thessaloniki and the Petar Konjović Competition in Novi Sad.
She has appeared as a soloist with the State Orchestra of Thessaloniki and has participated in the International Paxos Chamber Music Festival. She was a member of the Stepić Trio, the State Orchestra of Thessaloniki Wind Quintet, and the State Orchestra of Thessaloniki Flute Quartet.
She is married to the cellist Zoran Stepić, and they have three children.
