The Thessaloniki State Symphony State Orchestra will give its first Athenian performance conducted by its new artistic director, the talented principal conductor Zoi Tsokanou, together with the accomplished German cellist Daniel Müller-Schott. Zoi Tsokanou has received several accolades at international competitions and has collaborated in recent years with numerous orchestras and operas all over  Europe. Young Daniel Müller-Schott is widely considered one of the most talented cellists of his generation, having worked with several internationally acclaimed orchestras and conductors (Vladimir Ashkenazy, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Kurt Masur, Sakari Oramo) and having several albums under his belt. Already at the age of 15 Müller-Schott stood out when he won first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. He has been praised several times for his technique and has been proclaimed “a fearless player with technique to burn” (New York Times) and an artist who “plays with existential urgency” (Stuttgarter  Nachrichten). The play list will include Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor and Shostakovich’s popular, uplifting Symphony No. 5

An iconic performance from Plácido Domingo will open this year’s Sani Festival. With an illustrious career including some 150 roles and more than 4.400 performances, over a hundred recordings, and an impressive collection of 12 Grammy Awards, he is rightfully recognized as one of the finest and most influential singing actors in the history of opera. Defined a ‘Renaissance man’, and awarded with many honorary titles and prizes, not only for his musical panache but for his humanitarian commitment, Plácido Domingo is an eclectic artist celebrated worldwide. Performing on Sani Hill on Saturday 6th July, the musical maestro is guaranteed to enchant. Performing beside him will be the singer, George Perris, a multilingual Greek-French tenor who has performed internationally and appeared onstage with Lara Fabian, Boston Pops and Michel Legrand, and the soprano Christina Poulitsi, an enchanting performer declared “one of the best interpreters of the role of the Queen of the Night” in Mozart’s ‘Magic Flute’. On stage for this performance will also be the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra, one of the major and historical symphonic ensembles in Greece, under the gifted direction of Jordi Bernàcer, who conducted regularly on prestigious international stages, such as the Vienna State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Semperoper Dresden and in the most important theatres in Italy and in Spain. In this synthesis, the ‘Domingo Myth’ will mark the start of a momentous musical summer under the stars on Sani Hill.
