Βreathtaking experience with the genius of Tan Dun
07 November 2025
Music lovers had the opportunity to live a thrilling experience when they attended the co-production of the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra with the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, in collaboration with the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, with the wonderful music of the multi-award winning composer Tan Dun.
Through three concertos for different instruments, the stories of the famous films ‘Hero’, ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ and ‘The Banquet’ were musically unfolded, as well as with a parallel screening of the corresponding scenes, with three great soloists performing each one.
Liya Petrova with her two famous violins, a Guarneri 'del Gesù and specifically the "Consolo" and a Stradivarius, performed the 'Hero Concerto (2010) for violin and orchestra', Jia Nan the 'Crouching Tiger Concerto (2000) for cello and orchestra', Magdalena Baczewska the 'The Banquet Concerto (2010) for piano and orchestra' and all together at the beginning and end of the concert the 'The Triple Resurrection (2013) for violin, cello, piano and orchestra', which transformed Tan Dun's 'Martial Arts Trilogy' into a 'Martial Arts Cycle', when he was asked to write something to honor Wagner's 200th anniversary and decided in this way to honor his own 'Ring Cycle', as he himself said in his introductory speech,
to the audience.
At the end of the evening there was a huge outburst of applause from the audience that lasted more than 5 minutes with the performers literally being deified, with this great conductor and composer as the central protagonist.
