English musical creation starring the human voice 11 May 2026

The concert series of the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra 'Sounds of the World' continued on Friday, May 8, with three wonderful works by English composers Benjamin Britten, Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The central theme of the concert works was the sea and the protagonist of the program was the human voice. After the 'Four Sea Interludes' from Britten's most famous opera "Peter Grimes", the great Hungarian mezzo-soprano Dorottya Láng followed, who was captivating in Elgar's 'Sea Pictures', while the baton was taken by the Greek soprano Chrysa Maliamani and the Female Vocal Ensemble 'Voci Contra Tempo', taught by Sofia Gioldasi, in the 'Antarctic Symphony' by Vaughan Williams. The English principal conductor of the TSSO Leo McFall was the most suitable guide on this wonderful musical journey, while he also shared with us an interesting piece of information: the famous sculptor father of David McFall had created a bronze bust of the composer Ralph Vaughan-Wlliams in 1956, capturing him working in his office. A copy of it is in the National Portrait Gallery and can be viewed here
